witten, Wismar, 1379

In 1379, the city of Wismar, which was part of the Hanseatic League, joined the Venetian Coinage League. It was a common monetary system where everyone would create coins with the same weight and silver content. One common identification symbol used was the star. On this coin it is seen inside a circle in the centre of a floral cross. The inscription around it reads: MONETA WYSMAR (= Coin of Wismar). The other side of the coin shows the coat of arms of the Principality of Mecklenburg
