florin, Florens,

In the growing international trade of the 13th century, the gold florin coin took on a dominant role. The name comes from the Italian city of Florence where this type of coin was first produced. The success of the Florin was largely due to the fact that the amount of gold in the coin did not change over time, but was constant, but also that many Florentine banks were international companies with networks across Europe.

This coin dates from 1353, and one side shows the city's patron, St John the Apostle. The other side is adorned with the coat of arms of the city of Florence, a heraldic iris flower.
