zecchino, Venedig, Celci, Lorenzo, 1361

In the 13th century, the gold denomination sequin (zecchino) was introduced in the mint of Venice. The type continued to be produced in unchanged design until the 19th century. This makes it the form of coin that has been used for the longest time without undergoing changes in its design.

This example was produced when Lorenzo Celsi was Doge (leader) of Venice between the years 1361-1365. One side shows the Doge kneeling in front of St Mark the Evangelist, the patron of Venice. On the other side, Jesus Christ is depicted standing inside a mandorla carrying the Gospel.
