Schilling, Lübeck, 1432

This shilling coin was made in 1432 in the town of Lybeck, which was part of the Hanseatic League.

One side of the coin bears the coat of arms of the town of Lybeck, a double eagle, and the text indicates where the coin was made. The motif on the other side is a cross together with a common saying in medieval Lybeck: ‘CRUX FUGAT OMNE MALUM’ which means ‘the cross dispels all evil’.

At the time of the coin's production, Lybeck was at war with the Kalmar Union, which consisted of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. They were fighting over the right to collect tolls on boats travelling through the Sound, known as the Sound Dues.
