sterling, Lincoln, Edvard I, 1272

This coin was made sometime between 1280 and 1281 in the English city of Lincoln during the reign of Edward I (1272-1307).

One side shows a crowned portrait with the inscription EDW R ANGL DNS HYB, (= Edward, King of England, Lord of Ireland). The way the king was depicted, with crown and curly hair, was something that also appeared on medieval Swedish coins.

The reverse design consists of a large cross with a trio of points at each angle. The text is: CIVITAS LINCOL' (= City of Lincoln). The mark at the end is the specific mark used in the mint where the coin was created.
