Mechelen, 1300
This textile seal weighs 7 grams and comes from the city of Mechelen in modern-day Belgium. The design consists of the medieval coat of arms of the city, in the form of three vertical lines inside a shield. Based on its stylistic features, it has been dated to the 14th century. The reverse of the seal shows a bishop's crozier (episcopal staff).
The seal was found during an archaeological excavation of Hovgården on Adelsö in the early 1990s along with many other Viking and medieval objects.
