gulden, Gelderland, von Egmont, Arnold, 1423

This gold coin of the denomination gulden originates from the medieval principality of Geldern in today's Netherlands. The coin is dated to the period of the reign of Arnold von Egmond (1423-1472).

The inscription ‘DVX ARNOLD’ GEL Z IVL Z COMIS Z', can be translated as “Prince Arnold of Geldern and Jülich, Count of Zutphen”. The text is placed around a collection of coats of arms from the areas he ruled. On the other side of the coin is a full-length figure of John the Baptist, whose name (+ S IOHAHNES BATISTA) can be read in the outer ring.
