Penning, Gotland, uncertain authority, circa 1220–1280
This coin bears a chequered cross on one side. This was the most common motif on 13th century Gotland silver pennings.
On the other side of this coin is the letter P within a triangle made up of dots, which makes this coin unique. The coin on display is the only one known to exist.
There are other coins of the same type that also have a P and a triangle, but in this case the triangle is lined. The letters B and W are also found on pennings with a corresponding triangle. W could mean Visby, but we do not know as yet what P stands for. They are thought to have been issued around 1260 to 1280.
