nobel, London, Edvard III av England,
This gold coin was minted in London after 1360 when Edward III was King of England (1327-1377). He also ruled Ireland and Aquitaine, part of southern France.
Around his armed portrait standing on a boat is the text: ‘E DWARD DEI GRA REX ANGL DNS HIBN Z AC’ which means ‘Edward by the Grace of God, King of England, Lord of Ireland and Aquitaine’.
The other side shows a cross surrounded by lions and crowns. The inscription is a biblical reference: ‘+ IHC AVTEM TRANCIENS P MEDIUM ILLORUM IBAT’ which can be translated as ‘But Jesus passed through them and went his way’.
This specimen was found in a coin deposit during an investigation of Västergatan in Lund, Scania.
